Rafting in Kukkolaraft

 

Tornionjoki river is the biggest free-flowing river in Europe in which whitefish and salmon spawn. Kukkolankoski rapids are a crown jewel of Tornionjoki river, which flows unobstructed even in winter.

Shooting the rapids is done in a rubberboat, and the customers participate on steering by paddling. The activity starts by going through safety and paddling instructions. Waterproof clothing, rubber boots, safety vests and helmets will be handed out to the participants.

Sprint  

The first shooting is called the 'basic track', and it follows the Finnish-Swedish border which is also where the river runs deepest !.  

Slalom 

The second run will be an 'action track' if circumstances allow. The first task of the track is to stop the raft on a back current. After that the raft is paddled along a fast track, which runs through the best waves of the river. The tasks are quite challenging. The total duration of the event is approximately an 90 minutes.

LOCATION: Our base of operations is the Pohjolan Pirtti, Nordic Safari house at the Kukkolankoski. It is 15 km from Tornio city to north by road E8.


SEASON: From June to October.  In the spring we run on Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays and in the summer every day.

TRIP LENGTH: We do twice an one kilometer trip and total duration
of the safari is about 90 minutes.

RAPIDS: Class III (summer)and Class IV & V (spring tide) depending on river levels.
 

Price is 40€ per person and including all necessary rafting equipment, waterproof clothing, rubber boots, life jackets, helmets and wetsuits if needed. We use self bailing rafts and licensed river guides.

The activities are in accordance of the guidelines provided by Association for Finnish Paddling and Rapids-Shooting Business for safety and use of boats used in shooting the rapids. Safari participants are expected to be in normal physical condition and at least 15 years of age; a person under 18 years of age may participate shooting the rapids with their parent. The participants should ensure that their insurance also covers possible damages sustained while shooting the rapids. Nordic Safaris has a certified quality system and safety and environmental management system based on the standard SFS-EN ISO 9001:2000. Weather conditions and changes in water depth may change schedules or routes on the rapids, or prevent shooting the rapids altogether. We reserve the right to makealterations.
