Atlantic salmon and sea trout in the River Tornionjoki

The River Tornionjoki (Torneälv in Swedish) flows into the northernmost rim of the Baltic Sea on the border of Finland and Sweden. The river system is distinctly the largest producer of wild salmon in the Baltic, and one of the largest present spawning rivers of Atlantic salmon in the world:

  • catchment of 40,010 km², and mean annual discharge of 400 m3/s
  • salmon spawn along the almost 1000-km long main stems from the lowermost riffles up to the headwaters 500 km from the sea
  • current annual juvenile production of 0.5-0.8 million smolts give rise to annual catch of 50,000 - 100,000 salmon in the Baltic salmon fishery

Sea trout spawn in the smaller tributaries, where salmon is seldom found. Trout is clearly less abundant than salmon in the river system.

Salmon and trout populations are studied based on obligations to international agreements concerning fisheries resources, their sustainable use and maintenance of biodiversity. Scientific information about these fish stocks is used, e.g., by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES, Working Group of Baltic salmon and trout WGBAST), which provides annual scientific management advice concerning Baltic salmon fisheries.
